What cornicette are
They are the motifs repeated down the margin of a squared exercise book: square waves, zigzags, mountains, teeth, lace. Italian children have been drawing them for generations, in the last year of nursery and the first years of primary school.
They are not free drawing. They have a rule — a motif that comes back the same, square after square — and the rule is what makes them an exercise.
Why pre-writing comes before letters
Before writing, a hand has to learn a regular movement: start at a point, reach another, stop, begin again the same way. That is motor work, not language work.
Repeating simple shapes trains stroke control, pressure, direction and staying inside a space. By the time letters arrive, the hand already knows how to move. Border patterns are the classic way to get there, and this is that same exercise on a screen.
How it works
The child sees the first repetitions already drawn and completes the rest. Every motif is worked through three times, with the help withdrawn a step at a time: trace it, continue it with the guide faded, then do it alone on the grid of dots.
A button shows the next line, as often as needed, counted nowhere. 36 motifs in order of difficulty. You also choose how big the squares should be.
No hurry, no mistakes
There is no timer, no score, no lives and no way to lose. A line in the wrong place stays pencil grey until you take it away. Time pressure damages exactly the control this exercise is meant to build.
Every finished pattern stays in the notebook, page after page: it is the work done, not a leaderboard.
